Based on powerful new concepts, the World-Education-Grid will provide quantum leap forward in the expressive power (i.e., system capabilities) available for formulating education solutions. In addition, it will provide the underlying mechanisms to address the important issues of education.
For example, it will provide the system machinery to support personalization of education, now and in the future as research creates new avenues for customizing education to the individual; it will provide the system machinery to explicitly identify and address the 'barriers-to-access' that impede the efficient delivery of education value; it will provide the system machinery to integrate mastery achievement (e.g., testing, skill demonstration) into the learning process and to enable lifetime refreshment of acquired knowledge and skills.
In addition, by supporting the identification and semantically-based classification (as opposed to lexically-based [i.e., words] classification) of education entities in a unified conceptual environment, it will enable a rich building-block environment for constructing education solutions. By providing the underlying system machinery for supporting the profiles of consumers and learning contexts, and the system machinery to support multiple versions of education solutions and their components, the World-Education-Grid will be able to enable customization to the level of the learner. In addition, the structure of the World-Education-Grid will create a framework for highly targeted education and systems research. As a consequence, research will have clear guidelines as to where to improve education.
